Schlumbergera (Zygocactus) 'Thor Freya'
Schlumbergera 'Thor Freya' is a cultivated hybrid in the Cactaceae family, more commonly referred to as a Zygocactus or Christmas Cactus. Its ancestral species are native to the coastal mountains of south-eastern Brazil, where they grow as epiphytes or lithophytes in humid, shaded forests. In these environments, plants root in mossy tree branches or rocky crevices, receiving filtered light, good air circulation, and frequent moisture.
The stems consist of flattened, jointed segments (phylloclades) with shallow notches along the edges. 'Thor Freya' is valued for its large, vivid magenta to fuchsia flowers, which appear at the tips of mature segments. The blooms are tubular and zygomorphic, well-suited to pollination by hummingbirds in their native habitat. In cultivation, this hybrid forms arching to cascading growth and can produce abundant flowers when given the correct seasonal cues.
Flowering is initiated by shorter day lengths and cooler night temperatures, typically in late autumn to early winter. With regular care and periodic repotting, plants can live for many years, becoming more floriferous over time.
Care Tips:
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light for optimal growth and flowering. Morning or late afternoon sun can be beneficial, but avoid direct midday sun to prevent scorch.
- Water: Keep the mix evenly moist during active growth and flowering. Reduce watering after the blooms fade, allowing the top layer of the soil to dry before rewatering.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Increase moisture in the air by misting or placing the pot on a pebble tray with water, ensuring the base of the pot is above the water level.
- Media: Use a free-draining, slightly acidic potting mix such as a blend of orchid bark, peat, and perlite to mimic epiphytic conditions.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Switch to a high-potassium formula a few weeks before flowering to encourage bud formation.
- Temperature: Maintain 18–24°C during growth. To initiate buds, provide night temperatures of 12–15°C for several weeks in autumn.
- Repotting: Repot every 3–4 years after flowering, refreshing the mix and moving to a slightly larger pot if required.
- Propagation: Take cuttings of 2–3 joined segments in spring or summer, allow them to callus for 24 hours, then plant in a well-draining mix.
