Schlumbergera (Zygocactus) 'Butterfly'

Schlumbergera 'Butterfly' is a cultivated hybrid in the Cactaceae family, more commonly known as a Zygocactus or Christmas Cactus. Its wild relatives originate from the coastal mountain forests of south-eastern Brazil, where they grow as epiphytes or lithophytes in shaded, humid habitats. In nature, they anchor themselves in moss-covered tree branches or rocky crevices, benefiting from filtered light, steady humidity, and free-draining organic matter.

The stems are composed of flattened, jointed segments (phylloclades) with shallow notches or serrations along their edges. 'Butterfly' produces large, bicoloured flowers, typically with a pale or white base that transitions into bright pink to magenta tips, creating a soft gradient effect. The tubular blooms emerge from the tips of mature segments and are adapted for pollination by hummingbirds in their native range. The plant’s naturally arching to cascading form makes it ideal for hanging baskets or raised planters.

Flowering is induced by shorter day lengths and cooler night temperatures, generally occurring from late autumn to early winter. With correct seasonal care, 'Butterfly' can provide a generous display of blooms annually.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is preferred. Morning or late afternoon sun can be beneficial, but protect from intense midday light to avoid stem scorch.
  • Water: Keep the potting mix evenly moist during active growth and flowering. After blooms fade, reduce watering slightly, allowing the top layer of soil to dry before the next application.
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Use a pebble tray with water or occasional misting in dry indoor air to maintain adequate moisture.
  • Media: Plant in a free-draining, slightly acidic mix containing orchid bark, peat, and perlite to replicate its natural epiphytic environment.
  • Fertiliser: Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Switch to a high-potassium fertiliser before flowering to encourage bud development.
  • Temperature: Maintain 18–24°C during growth. To set buds, provide night temperatures of 12–15°C for several weeks in autumn.
  • Repotting: Repot every 3–4 years after flowering, refreshing the mix and using a pot only slightly larger than the current one.
  • Propagation: Take cuttings of 2–3 joined segments in spring or summer, allow them to callus for 24 hours, then plant in a well-draining mix.
