Aloe longistyla

Aloe longistyla is a dwarf aloe species endemic to the Northern Cape of South Africa. It forms small, compact rosettes of fleshy, blue-green leaves edged with fine teeth. In summer, mature plants send up slender inflorescences that can reach 30–40 cm in height, bearing clusters of tubular flowers in shades of pink to red, sometimes tipped with lighter tones. These flowers attract sunbirds and insects in its native habitat of rocky grasslands. The species is well adapted to arid conditions, storing water in its leaves and tolerating prolonged dry periods.

Care Tips

  • Light: Requires full sun for compact growth and regular flowering.
  • Water: Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry between waterings; increase slightly in summer when in flower.
  • Media: Plant in a very free-draining gritty succulent mix to prevent root rot.
  • Fertiliser: Apply a diluted low-nitrogen fertiliser during the active growing season.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm, dry conditions but tolerates light frost if kept dry, best above 5 °C.
  • Repotting: Repot infrequently, as plants remain small and form solitary rosettes.
