Ludisia discolor, commonly referred to as the jewel orchid, is a terrestrial orchid species native to Southeast Asia, thriving in humid forest floors. Noted for its dark velvety leaves and subtle white to pale pink flower spikes, this plant is highly favoured for its foliage rather than its blooms.

Distinctive Features

• Velvet foliage: Deep maroon to blackish-green leaves with fine coppery pinstripes and a satiny texture.
• Compact flower spikes: Produces delicate white flowers with yellow centres on upright stems during late summer to early autumn.
• Low, creeping habit: Spreads via short rhizomes, forming attractive clumps ideal for decorative containers.

• Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; avoid direct sun to prevent leaf scorch.
• Water: Keep soil consistently moist but never soggy; reduce watering slightly in winter.
• Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity; mist regularly or use a humidity tray.
